ponte. New Approaches for Preschools and Elementary Schools

ponte. New Approaches for Preschools and Elementary Schools

ponte is a joint program of the German Children and Youth Foundation (Deutsche Kinder- und Jugendstiftung) and the International Academy for Innovative Pedagogy, Psychology and Economics at Freie Universität Berlin (INA gGmbH).

In the ponte (Italian for “bridge”) program, elementary schools and preschools are paired in “learning tandems” that, guided by trained moderators, learn alongside and from each other how to smooth children’s transition to elementary school. The development taking place at these model facilities is viewed as an example for comparable approaches to reform throughout Germany. The ponte project is thus one of numerous quality development programs set up after PISA.

The ponte project was initiated in August, 2004, in Brandenburg. In 2006 and 2007, the program was expanded to the Federal States of Berlin and Saxony and to the Trier region in the Federal State of Rhineland-Palatinate. The ponte program was concluded on schedule in December, 2008. A total of about 200 teachers at 74 different institutions participated in ponte.
