The situation within the primary education system in Germany is precarious: In no other comparable European country are social background and educational opportunities so intertwined as in Germany. The PIRLS-Study and other similar studies have recently drawn attention to the fact that by the end of the term of primary education, future educational opportunities are in most cases preordained – to a large extent affected by the social background the children are from. For the education system of a democratic society this is an intolerable state of affairs. This conference aims to clarify the situation.
We are very pleased to be able to offer you an attractive programme: The primary education system will be analysed in the context of far reaching economic and social changes. There will be five plenary talks given by leading researchers in the field of education, some of them in English. In addition we offer workshops dealing with ten different topics, carried out in parallel sessions and led by specialists in the respective fields. The aim of the conference is to come to conclusions and produce results, which could then be implemented in further empirical research in the field of education, and which could also be applied to political, teaching and methodological decisions for primary schools.
We would like to invite all educational researchers to present their own research in one of the workshops or in a poster presentation, thus enriching the conference. We wish to explicitly include all junior researchers in this invitation.
The language of discussion will be mainly German, but papers and contributions in English language are very welcome as nearly all participants speak English as well.
IMPORTANT/ Addendum to agenda
Before the start of the conference on Monday, 24.9.2007 from 8.00 to 13.00, participants have the opportunity to visit selected Berlin primary schools. We are pleased to offer you this school visit programme in cooperation with the "SERVICEAGENTUR GANZTÄGIG LERNEN". The majority of the schools is situated in inner city destricts with challenging social conditions. Since places are limited we suggest that you enroll early if you are interested.
