Global Urban Studies Institute
GLOBUS is dedicated to international urban development planning with a focus on newly developing economies in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Its basic philosophy is grounded upon the experience that conventional text-book knowledge does not provide adequate guidance in directing balanced urban growth in these regions today. In addition to conventional spatial planning, a strong emphasis must be attributed to:
- Interdisciplinary cooperation
- Social integration with a pro-poor recognition
- Challenges of competitive globalization
- Fostering the development of local identities
- Mitigation and adaptation to the threat of disasters and change of the eco-system
- International networking
- Evidence based theoretical base
- Orientation along visionary long term scenarios
- Planning of processes rather than structures
GLOBUS activities rely on more than 30 years of experience in international cooperation projects, field research and academic tuition in over 40 countries all over the word. The institute relies on a large network of associate members and partner institutions. It is closely linked to TRIALOG Journal and its professional network, UN-HABITAT, ARCHIMED academic publishers, and a number of highly recognized universities worldwide.
Activities of GLOBUS fall in three main fields:
RESEARCH: Own empirical research and coordination of research teams and networks, documentation and publication of research results.
CONSULTANCIES to municipalities and international cooperation agencies such as GIZ, KfW, UN-HABITAT, ILO, EC etc.
TUITION AND TRAINING: Tailor made training courses on emerging aspects of urban development planning; curriculum development for postgraduate higher education institutions; organization of international conferences.
Recent projects include, among others, research and feasibility studies on Participatory urban upgrading in Havana, Cairo and Cape Town, Urban violence prevention in Sub-Sahara Africa, Planning of 100.000 inhabitant suburb in Addis Ababa, migrant integration in Istanbul and Berlin, gender focused settlement planning in Alcântara Brazil, community based neighbourhood improvement in Cuba…
