Ongoing projects:
Individual and collective ways of coping long-term with extreme suffering and external help after a natural disaster: meanings and emotions
In 2006 rural Java, Indonesia, was exposed to a severe earthquake followed by an extensive and diverse amount of international, national and local aid. In three differently affected villages we examine, how the inhabitants frame the event and cope with the earthquake and its consequences in the long term, including how they cope with the effects of external help and how they deal with future threats. The earthquake experience is often interpreted as premonition or enlightenment, whereas the religious-spiritual references seem to be manifold. The increasing Islamization (90%) and the minor Christianization cover up older so called “Javanese” orientations, e. g. virtues and stances that affiliate to newer influences. In general, these meaning making processes with their psycho-spiritual embeddings seem to be health-promoting and individually as well as socially stabilizing. They constitute an important part of the so called “resilience” which is usually solely understood in technical or economical terms. Therefor our results encourage further developing a cultural psychology of coping with disasters, which has been neglected so far.
An English book publication with the working title „Cultural Psychology of Coping with Disaster“ is in preparation.

Partizipation und Empowerment in der Wohnungslosenhilfe Offenburg
Mit einer partizipativen Methodik wird aufgezeigt, wie marginalisierte Menschen als aktive und selbständige Mitbürger wieder Teil des Gemeinwesens werden.

Zukunft Fotografie
Kinder und Jugendliche in den sozial schwachen Regionen Argentiniens haben nur geringe Zukunftsperspektiven. Hier setzt das Projekt an. Kinder und Jugendliche aus den Slums von Rosario erhalten die Möglichkeit, fotografieren zu lernen und damit eine Perspektive für die Zukunft zu gewinnen.
