Project Description
Starting in 2010, the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) will collect longitudinal data on the development of competencies, educational processes, educational decision making, and educational returns in formal, non-formal, and informal contexts across the lifespan. Within the NEPS, the pillar “migration” will explore issues related to ethnic disparities and their associations with general mechanisms of social inequalities. The project carried out by the Department of Educational Research at the Freie Universität Berlin will focus on the role of language-related factors for educational careers of immigrants and their descendants. This will include such factors as patterns of first and second language use, language skills in Turkish and Russian as first languages, provision and use of programs promoting first and second language skills as well as language-related aspects of identity and acculturation.
