What happens with the results of the university-wide surveys?

The surveys of students and graduates provide Freie Universität Berlin with essential information for quality management. The results help to improve teaching and study-related services. They are discussed at all levels of the university to identify opportunities for quality development.

Who receives which results?

  • Overall report: Provides the Executive Board, survey participants, and the interested public with an overview of differences between the three subject groups Natural sciences, social sciences, humanities/cultural studies, and of trends compared to the previous survey. (Published on the FU website)
  • Faculty reports: Inform faculties and central institutes about program- and faculty-specific results. Significant findings in comparison to the respective subject group are highlighted in these reports and also shared with the Division V: Academic Affairs and the Executive Board.
  • Sub-analyses: Provide service units with feedback on the results of their particular offerings, e.g., satisfaction with e-learning and hybrid teaching, General professional skills courses (Allgemeine Berufsvorbereitung,ABV), or other services.

How are the results used for quality development?

Overall report:

Results are presented and discussed in various university committees, such as the Deans’ Round, the Advisory Board for Quality Assurance in Teaching and Education, and occasionally the Academic Senate. The aim is to inform stakeholders in quality management and the university community about trends in the evaluation of teaching and study conditions and to derive potential university-wide measures.

Faculty reports:

Faculty- and program-specific results are used for internal discussion and action, e.g.,

    • in department or institute councils,
    • in education committees, dean’s offices, or examination boards,
    • and for deriving faculty-specific measures, considering additional indicators of teaching and study quality (e.g., university statistics).

The program-specific results are also used for program-specific quality reports, in which the results from various quality assurance instruments (Ampelauswertung /Traffic Light System, Peer Consultation, Key Indicator Grid) are consolidated and, if necessary, measures are derived.

Foundations:

Principles, responsibilities, occasions, and feedback formats for evaluations in the field of teaching and learning are defined in the Evaluation Guidelines of Freie Universität Berlin. The processes of central surveys are documented here (in German only):
