Neural basis of language acquisition

Affiliation:       Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

Abstract:          The study of the infant brain presents several challenges. During this period infants rapidly develop cognitive abilities, while simultaneously the brain grows up and modifies its functions. Thus, the insights that such studies provide mostly describe transient states, which must be integrated to a developmental history to be fully understood. An extra challenge is the fact that the behavioral repertoire of young children is very limited, meaning that many times we must interpret our results looking at adult data. Finally, new advances in experimental approaches and techniques aimed at evaluating young children's behavior, have unveiled that, from a very early age, infants have adult-like capacities. In this talk, I will present some of our infant studies on language acquisition and discuss current challenges in the field.
