Title: The use of sensory cortex for processing both external & internal stimuli
Affiliation: Ernst Strüngmann Institute (ESI) for Neuroscience of the Max Planck Society, Frankfurt, Germany
Abstract: Sensory cortices, including primary sensory areas, are involved in a host of cognitive functions including attention, working memory, mental imagery, expectation, and many others. When sensory areas are recruited for cognition, is every instance its own specific phenomenon? Or may there be a more general principle? In this talk, I will explore why sensory recruitment happens, and how internal sensory representations may differ from perception. I’ll also offer a computational account of how sensory recruitment might be implemented in the brain.
