Special Education
The special education insitute focuses on the areas of emotional and social development, language development, and learning development. The special education degree programme in primary school education or teaching at integrated secondary schools is offered as a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Education.
These study programs focus on the acquisition of content knowledge and methodological skills. Particularly important are neurocognitive, cognitive, linguistic, and social-emotional development, with reference to special educational needs in these areas and to inclusive education.
Further consideration is given to the pedagogical challenges of designing lessons for highly heterogeneous groups of learners, as well as to the underlying educational concepts and support strategies. Questions of equity, inclusive education, and societal values and norms are also parts of the curriculum.
All information regarding the application for the Bachelor's or Master's program can be found on the main website of the Freie Universität Berlin (in German).
We look forward to receiving numerous registrations for our special education newsletter, which we send out at irregular intervals. The newsletter provides information on topics from the field of special needs education that are not necessarily relevant to the degree program. These may include, for example, information on participating in surveys as part of current research projects within the department or institutional and private job offers that require a special education background.
