Statement of the WERA-IRN Extended Education Concerning the Situation of Children and Youth Worldwide During the COVID-19 Crisis

Under the conditions of COVID-19, it is our sense that extended education is being pushed aside and forgotten in the midst of of virtual teaching and learning.

This statement intends to bring attention to the great needs that young people have in extended education. The fact that so many students do not have these enriching environments, even virtually, is a very serious matter. Parents understand this issue and want schools to open not only for reasons of academic success, but also for students to be able to socialize and to have safe places to go while parents work.

Please distribute this statement to your national constituencies, policy-makers and practitioners to make the case with us for whole school days, afterschool, extended education programs, summer programs, and more as well as to gain some traction internationally. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
