FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

Most students work around 10 hours a week alongside their studies. This seems to work well because the timetables are set at the beginning of the semester and employers can adapt to them.

Some students also have their own children or family members in need of care to care for. There may be time constraints here. However, the Free University of Berlin is trying to accommodate this issue as much as possible.

Before the start of the lecture period, students are asked to name courses that are particularly convenient in such a case. The examination offices will then carry out the respective registrations before the places are allocated. Only proof of the child to be cared for (up to the age of 12) or the family member to be cared for must be presented (e.g. birth certificate or proof of care).

The Family Service at Freie Universität can also help:

“I have completed all the work and only have to register/write/submit my master’s thesis. Can I de-register now?”

Unlike almost all other universities in Germany, the answer here is:

YES!

If you have completed all other achievements apart from the final thesis, you can be exmatriculated. Current letters from student administration reminding you to provide feedback can also be ignored. These are automated reminder letters.

However, please check carefully in Campus Management whether you have completed all modules before de-matriculating.

Important:

You will always be exmatriculated officially at the end of the semester (Summer semester: September 30th; Winter semester: March 31st) (e.g. due to successful completion of your studies or lack of re-registration). However, you can deregister yourself at any time. Please apply for this directly to the student administration:

The examination office can issue up to three certifications of your final documents free of charge.

Please contact the examination office via Email.

Once an exam has been passed, it cannot be repeated.

Yes, of course: +49 30 838-74713

No, it's not needed.

BUT in order to keep study services (for example: FU-Email, Library access, Mensa discount)

The master's thesis can only be submitted digitally by email in PDF format to the MCNB examination office.

Please ask the lecturers whether they would like to receive a physical copy. If this is the case, you should also physically submit the thesis directly to the lecturer.

Email: macnb@ewi-psy.fu-berlin.de

In a course where attendance is required, you may be absent three times (regardless of whether you have excused or unexcused). In addition, the lecturer can request compensation for a 4th or 5th absence. However, he also has the right to announce that there will be no 4th or 5th absence and that the student will leave the course after the 3rd absence. Students should not be allowed more than 5 missed appointments (including compensation).

Registration for courses in Blackboard takes place automatically via registration in Campus Management.

If you are registered for a course in Campus Management but not in Blackboard at the same time, the lecturers can register you later.

The lecturers also have the option of activating the course in Blackboard and giving you a password with which you can log in to Blackboard yourself.

If you have further problems, such as incorrect downloading of documents or the inability to download documents, etc., please contact the CeDis hotline: +49 30 838-54900

You can get a performance overview / a transcript of records (ToR) issued by the examination office. This includes all services documented in the campus management system (CM).

If not all ratings have been entered for you, then please contact the corresponding lecturers of the respective event and request the Campus Management entries.

Write an email and mention your complete first name, last name and matriculation number (also in the subject line), then your wish. Don't forget to provide all the following information:

  • the semester in question
  • the event number
  • the name of the event
  • the lecturer

The examination office cannot make these entries.

In the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs at the Free University of Berlin, students must log in via the central online registration portal Campus Management and register for the modules and associated courses and examinations.

The prerequisite for this is enrollment and the matriculation number. Anyone who is enrolled but does not yet have a student number cannot yet register with Campus Management.

In this case, please go to the Examination Office website and download the registration form. Please fill this out and hand it over to the examination office signed by the lecturer.

No, you do not need to register separately for the module examination. You have already registered for the module examination by registering online as part of Campus Management.

If not all ratings have been entered for you, then please contact the corresponding lecturers of the respective event and request the CM entries.

Write an email and mention your complete first name, last name and matriculation number (also in the subject line), then your wish. Don't forget to provide all the following information:

  • the semester in question
  • the event number
  • the name of the event
  • the lecturer

The examination office cannot make these entries.

If you have failed to register for an event in CM, but have completed it and would now like to have your performance recognized, please contact the examination office. You cannot subsequently register lecturers in CM.

Plagiarism is deception in the context of a performance or examination in which the student gives the impression that they have completed a performance independently and without outside help, although this is not the case. Plagiarism not only includes unmarked copying of content from sources such as the Internet or (scientific) texts, but also copying from fellow students. If it involves copying by fellow students, the person who allows the copying is also involved in the fraud. The consequences of plagiarizing exams and coursework depend on the severity and frequency of plagiarizing.

Consequences of plagiarizing and cheating when taking exams:

The examination performance is graded as “insufficient” (5.0) (grading or differentiated evaluation) or “failed” (undifferentiated evaluation).

The attempt at cheating will be reported to the examination office and noted there. Depending on the severity or frequency of the attempts at deception, the examination board can decide on further consequences. The examination board can also determine that participation in courses must be repeated in whole or in part.

In serious cases that would justify the revocation of a university degree, the examination board can determine that the entire examination has been definitively failed.

The requirement to refrain from plagiarism and deception not only applies to examinations such as theses, term papers and exams, but also to all coursework to be completed as part of the course of study. Here too, unmarked copying of content from sources such as the Internet or (scientific) texts or copying from fellow students represents an attempt at deception. If independent services such as writing texts, minutes, presentations, working on exercises (etc.) have to be provided for active participation, the independence of the service is essential.

The FU-wide deadline for registering for modules, courses and examinations begins on the first Monday of the semester (semester always begins on April 1st (summer semester) or October 1st (winter semester).

The deadline for changing and deregistering ends on the third Friday after the start of the lecture period (the start of the lecture period varies, usually mid-April or mid-October).

These deadlines apply to online registration via Campus Management (ecampus@fu-berlin.de) as well as to registrations in paper form.

As part of Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, you register online for modules, courses and exams at the Free University of Berlin.

Once you have registered, you can view your timetable and your performance level here, as well as download and print out various certificates relating to your studies.

Exam

If you are unable to attend a scheduled exam date, you do not need to officially withdraw from it (e.g. in the event of illness = no medical certificate is required).

However, brief information to the lecturers would be helpful for their preparation for the exam (e.g. number of copies of the exam copies).

This examination attempt is then deemed not to have been made.

Important: The situation is different if you show up for the scheduled exam date and take notes on the exam. In this case, the examination is considered to have been taken. If you hand in this exam (e.g. hand in a blank sheet), this attempt is considered failed (= grade 5.0).

Homework/Thesis

After consultation with your lecturer on a presentation topic, if a written paper, a term paper topic, or a project report is handed in, the associated submission period has begun.

If, after this agreement, you do not submit your examination at the agreed time, the attempt will be considered failed (= 5.0). In the event of illness, a medical certificate including a form (to be completed by the doctor) must be submitted. A simple sick note is not enough!

The following should be noted when requesting an extension of the processing period

• Equal treatment of students takes priority. It must be clarified in each individual case why an extension of the processing deadline should be granted.

• If there is a valid reason, this must be explained and proven in writing to the examination board (exception: in the case of illness, a medical certificate including a form (to be filled out by the doctor) must be presented to the lecturer; both must then be submitted to the examination office).

• Valid reasons are usually reasons that are not your fault and are understandable, such as: Illness, accident, court summons, death of a close family member.
