Our research explores the foundations of human language, cognition, and emotion
At the heart of our current work lies a focus on cross-linguistic reading research. We investigate the perceptual, attentional, memory-related, emotional, and psycholinguistic processes involved in word, sentence, and text comprehension. Our studies include both typical readers across the life span and individuals with reading difficulties—such as struggling readers and people with dyslexia—across multiple languages (German, English and French).
In interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations we examine how especially literary texts—ranging from narrative genres like short stories and novels to poetic forms such as sonnets, ballads, and song lyrics—are processed. These projects blend literary studies, digital humanities with cutting-edge cognitive science. We employ state-of-the-art methods, including eye-tracking and pupillometry, electroencephalography (EEG), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), as well as computational modeling and machine learning.
